The 1962 serial number plate is located on the left front door hinge pillar, on full-size models, and is visible through a hole in the hinge pillar cover. On F-85 models the serial number plate is located on the left front door windshield pillar. Each serial number is prefixed by three numbers and a letter. The serial number plate looks like this, but will appear vertically on the car instead of horizontally:
The first two digits (62) indicate the year 1962.
The third number designates the series as follows:
0 - Standard F-85 (30 series)
1 - Deluxe F-85 (31 series)
2 - Dynamic 88 (32 series)
5 - Super 88 (35 series)
6 - Starfire (36 series)
8 - Ninety-Eight (38 series)
The letter in the serial number indicates the plant at which the car was assembled. This letter should correspond to the Fisher Body plant code shown on the Fisher Body Date Plate. Final assembly plant codes are as follows:
M - Lansing, Michigan
A - Atlanta, Georgia
K - Kansas City, Kansas
L - Linden, New Jersey
C - South Gate, California
W - Wilmington, Delaware
T - Arlington, Texas
F-85 models were only built at the Lansing, South Gate and Kansas City facilities.
The starting serial number for each series at each plant is 01001.
Our sample serial number - 626W04730 - indicates:
62 = 1962
6 = Starfire
W = Wilmington, Delaware final assembly plant
04730 = 3,730th Starfire to leave the Wilmington, Delaware final assembly plant
It also would have been possible to have a Dynamic 88 with VIN 622W04730, a Super 88 with VIN 625W04730 and a Ninety Eight with VIN 628W04730, all coming from the Wilmington, Delaware assembly plant.
In addition, it would have been possible to have Starfires with VINs 626M04730 from Lansing, 626M04730 from Atlanta, 626K04730 from Kansas City, 626L04730 from Linden, 626C04730 from South Gate, and 626T04730 from Arlington.
It was possible for a higher production cars, produced earlier in the model year, to have a higher serial number than a lower production car produced later in the year. As an example, it was possible to have a Dynamic 88, built in Lansing, in March, with a serial number of 622M55555, and a Starfire, built in Lansing, in June, with a serial number of 626M22222.
